Imperative! Read this summary:
This is to critique this episode for the inadequate review of the work on accupuncture. There is some evidence to demonstrate its effect in various areas: For a study from the Canadian Medical Association Journal on the effect of acupuncture in perioperative anesthesia go here: http://www.cmaj
.ca/cgi/content/full/176/2/179 For the latest literature review by the World Health Organiztion pertaining to areas where accupucture is effective vs. where it is not go here: http://www.euro.who.int/HEN/HTResults?language=English

HTCode=acupuncture
The paper linked off the site is here: http://www.rep.bham.ac.uk/2006/Mapping_Acupunture.pdf For a current review of where the evidence is at in the United States and in general, look at Acupuncture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acupuncture#Scientific_research_into_efficacy Finally, to s
ee what skeptics who have done a bit more of an extensive look into it (namely, Michael Shermer) have to say about it, click here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=866YvYJRvWw Also, one other inappropriate remark I caught Penn and Teller making, which I didn't mention in this video, was an ad homine
m attack against the founder of therapeutic touch where they said, "...she must have missed a couple of days of nursing school, where they covered SCIENCE..." The study that debunked TT was sufficient. Ad hominem attacks are NOT necessary in debunking, and only weaken the argument as they are an err
or in reasoning.

They are good entertainment but the problem is they fail their own mission. They claim they are trying to sort of make the world better, public service right? But they are not teaching people to reason well, they are almost as ignorant as the new age guys only their bias works the other way around. They should try to teach people to do their own homework instead of just trying to do it for them. They do it wrong anyway.

About acupuncture, on some type, It's true... But, I also know that it's often use on think they are medically... Well, I do not know if it's true, but it's seem hard that a needle could help for: I like to have a proof. Example of think that I'm sceptic that been claim to be cure be acupuncture: (I only ask scientific proof, if posible.) Anxiety,Depression,Insomnia,Nervousness,Neurosis ,Addiction control,Stress,Cataracts, Poor vision, diarrhea.

Well, if I follow the pdf of Birgimham, we have a list of think that work, like some trouble with respiratory, Gastrointestinal, different type of Pain... For dependences and some Neurological think, they said they have some clue but more is needed. Si I quest Anxiety,Nervousness,Stress, Cataracts (with been advanced in Internet) is false since they is no evidence of it. And poor vision is vague.

Precisely. The fact, however, that they have a list of things where the evidence says it works better than a placebo, contradicts Penn and Teller's statement that Acupuncture is just a placebo. Only for SOME disorders is it ineffectual. Others, like knee pain, it's completely effectual. The first link which I posted in the link from CMAJ (Canadian Medical Association Journal) is a study that covered perioperative knee pain and anxiety, so the claims of it curing anxiety are still under dispute.

I agree. However, Penn and Teller incorrectly claim that acupuncture works no better than a placebo. (That's only true for SOME of the things it's been applied to.) That's what I'm trying to correct. Other than that, I have no issue with Penn and Teller debunking alternative medicine.

Accupuncture is still being researched to determine just how effective it is. It is known that it works beyond placebo levels for certain ailments, but most of the ailments it is found to work for don't require hospitalization (per the literature review cited). However, there are some hospitals using it as part of perioperative anesthesia, especially for ambulatory knee surgery. Also, bear in mind that the evidence demonstrating acupuncture's efficacy in these areas is all from within the last

(cont) few years, so it will take a while for it to permeate throughout the medical field, like how it takes a little while for psychiatrists to switch over to a new medication when it is proven to be a more effective treatment for a particular mental disorder than an old one. The other major reason as to why it's not taught at universities is largely because there aren't any regulatory bodies to establish what requirements have to be met medically for an acupuncturist to practice in North

(cont) America. The one exception to that is the province of British Columbia in Canada, which requires that all acupuncturists and doctors of traditional Chinese medicine pass exams and do internships before being granted licenses to practice. The board is run by both TCM practitioners and western doctors. Even with that, the regulatory board was set up only in the last couple of years, and acupuncture still is slowly making its way into mainstream medical practice as a supplement there.
